What drives PCB assembly cost

  • Component count and package type: more parts means more placement time. Fine-pitch QFP, BGA and 01005 passives take longer and cost more than standard 0603/0805 parts.
  • Board size and panelization: boards that panelize efficiently use the SMT line better, lowering the per-unit cost.
  • Quantity: setup and programming are amortized over the batch, so unit cost drops sharply from prototype to volume.
