IPC-A-610 Standards for PCB Assembly Quality, Explained

IPC-A-610 is the industry standard for the acceptability of electronic assemblies. It defines what a good solder joint looks like across three product classes, giving buyers and manufacturers a shared language for quality.

The three IPC classes

• Class 1 – General electronic products: function is the priority, for consumer items where cost drives the build
• Class 2 – Dedicated service: higher reliability for products expected to work over time
• Class 3 – High performance: for aerospace, medical and other applications where failure is unacceptable

Why the class matters

The class you specify changes inspection criteria, process controls and cost. Stating it in your RFQ sets the bar for first-article inspection and final visual checks, and aligns expectations on both sides.
